Why does the edge of the metal strip appear wavy after splitting?

In the process of longitudinal shearing of metal plates, sometimes irregular waves will appear on both sides of the strip after the strip is completed. This phenomenon not only affects the appearance, but also may have an adverse impact on the subsequent moulding or stamping link. To solve this problem, it is necessary to understand the force and stability state of the strip in the shear area, and analyse the specific causes of the wave.

The thin plate strip needs to be controlled and stable in the shearing area. When cutting the round knife, it is usually matched with a slightly smaller outer diameter of the female knife side rubber ring and a slightly larger male knife side rubber ring. Through up and down pressing and lateral guidance, the strip material is smoothly pushed out of the shear area. If the strip material is slightly displaced in the shear zone, and the diagonal length of the thin plate cross-section is greater than the bandwidth, it is easy to generate waves at the edges of both sides. With continuous production, waves will continue to appear and be irregular.

Common causes of material instability
1. The accuracy and installation of the round knife
If the end of the round knife jumps over or is eccentric, it will lead to uneven force on the material, increase the transverse disturbance in the shear area, and form waves.

2. The tool position parameter setting is unreasonable.
The gap between the upper and lower knives or the amount of overlap is inappropriate, which will weaken the binding force of the shear area on the strip material, making the strip material easy to swing at the moment of shearing.

3. Improper assembly or selection of rubber rings
The deviation of the outer diameter of the rubber ring, the different centre from the iron core or the uneven wear will reduce the pressing and guiding effect, making the strip material unable to stably push out the shear area.

4. The pressing method is not suitable.
When the rubber ring is not used and only relying on wooden strips or other simple devices to press the material, the pressing force is insufficient, and the belt material is in a semi-free state in the shear area.

5. The plate shape or internal stress of raw materials is poor
The plate is warped, uneven thickness or uneven distribution of internal stress. Even if other conditions are reasonable, it is easy to cause edge waves.

6. The speed and tension of the strips do not match.
High-speed striping or tension control instability will reduce the stability of the strip in the shear area and make the wave phenomenon more obvious.

To solve the problem of material edge wave, we should start from the stability of the shear area and comprehensively consider the accuracy of the circular knife, the position setting, the state of the rubber ring, the pressing method, the strip speed and the tension regulation. Through systematic optimisation, rather than single-point adjustment, the flatness of the material edge can be significantly improved.
