What is a Slitter Knives?

In many different product industries, the material used to make a product needs to be formed and adjusted into smaller units for processing. This process is called "slitting" and it requires the use of multiple blades. These slitting blades are used to trim vinyl, film, fabric and textiles, paper, laminates and more. Depending on the desired manufacturing process, there are different methods of slitting that are most effective. Slitter Knives Suppliers would like to introduce you to three of these methods so that you can have a general idea of these processes.
Slitter Knives

Razor Slitting

This method of using Slitter Knives is most commonly used for trimming plastics, vinyl, film, tape and other thin materials. Because this method is fairly simple and inexpensive, it is very widely used in many industries. The sharpness of these slitting blades allows for very clean cuts and minimizes the collection of dust or debris in the process. However, the razor cutting process is less effective because thicker materials offer more resistance to thin blades. Slitting blades for this conversion process are not expensive and can be easily replaced.

Shearing and Slitting

The shear method of slitting is used when the material to be converted is thicker than the material available for razor slitting. Typically, these materials include thick films, paper products, foils, composites and layered materials. Shear slitting means that the process uses two blades. Essentially, the process creates a powerful pair of scissors where the two blades meet at a desired predetermined angle to obtain the desired cut. The intersection of these two blades, called the male and female blades, is where the material splits. Interestingly, this method generates the least amount of heat due to friction, so it is often used for conversion processes that require long runs.

Scribing or Crimping Slitting

This slitting method is a quick and messy method. This process can be used when precision is not required and large, thick or tough materials need to be trimmed and separated. The process relies on a pneumatic holder to force the blade through the material, creating a rough edge and a slight compression of the material around the cut. While this method of slitting is not precise, it is effective and inexpensive.
